OSCO Controls Powers Intelligent Bridge Operation
Challenge
Autoquip—parent company of OSCO Controls—partnered with a roofing products manufacturer to deliver a robust, custom-engineered bascule bridge. They needed OSCO Controls to design an advanced control system to operate the bridge to support heavy forklift traffic and accommodate periodic rail crossings. The system needed to prioritize safety, precision, and reliability in a demanding outdoor industrial environment.
Solution
OSCO Controls designed and supplied the control panels and control logic to power and manage the hydraulic bridge system. The user-friendly push button interface allows operators to raise or lower the bridge with precision. When the “Down” button is pressed, the system is programmed to first automatically retract the platform wings, ensuring a clear path for lowering. Once the wings are fully retracted, the bridge lowers into position and locks securely in place for safe operation.
Key components of the control system included:
- Automated Bridge Operation: PLC based system to control the timing and sequencing of the hydraulic lift, ensuring consistent, safe performance.
- Safety Interlocks & Sensors: Position sensors and interlocks prevent movement unless all safety conditions are met, such as cleared traffic zones and locked bridge position.
- Mounted Push Button Controls: Simple, operator-friendly interface with clearly marked push buttons mounted on the equipment for easy activation of the bridge lift and lower sequence.
- Lockout System: Redundant controls to lock the bridge securely in both lowered and raised positions.
The system manages the entire lift sequence of the bridge, ensuring it raises to a secure vertical position for train passage and lowers safely for ground traffic—each step monitored and verified by sensors and logic controls.
Result
By integrating OSCO’s advanced control system, Autoquip delivered a streamlined and safe way to operate the bridge that performs efficiently in a demanding industrial setting. The system supports daily operation with minimal manual input, ensuring safe train access and dependable material handling traffic flow.
